A Dim Idea

24 February 2007 in

A while ago, I bought one of these here shiny things. And while it's been a great new machine, it has a fatal flaw*: The damn screen's too damn bright. I stay up late with Sophie with most of the lights out, and the thing is so bright, I think she has trouble going to sleep sometimes.

So enter Brightness Control. Somehow, this app is able to dim the screen further than the OS X built-in controls. I have a sneaking suspicion it doesn't dim the backlight at all, but instead darkens the image sent to the monitor, which would be disappointing, because I've become a bit of an energy conservation geek, and I know that displaying darker colors on a LCD doesn't save energy like it does with a CRT.

Anyway, I'm not burning my retinas at night ala that episode of Northern Exposure where the mayor goes manic because he's addicted to his Seasonal Affective Disorder prevention headset.

Wow, the chances that someone else knows what I'm talking about in that last paragraph are rather slim.

*OK, two: one of the internal fans is noisy sometimes until you adjust the screen. I'd demand to have Apple fix it, but then I'd have to give up my computer while they did. So I'm grinning and bearing it.
